Each August, Tremont West presents in partnership with LAND Studio, Councilman Joe Cimperman and Cleveland Public Theatre to showcase many of the performing arts jewels Cleveland has to offer.  Since August of 2014, Arts in August was chosen by Cleveland Scene as the best performance venue under the stars. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit.  Come alone or bring friends and family.  There is plenty of opportunity to meet new friends and reunite with old ones at Arts in August.  Bring a picnic, pick up take out at one of our fine dining establishments or eat out before or after the show.
Thank you to Cleveland Public Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director, Raymond Bobgan, for curating this year’s Arts in August performance schedule!  This year’s series will not disappoint.
Kicking off Arts in August is the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival.  They will perform The Merchant of Venice on both Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd.  This year’s performance is directed by Scott Miller.
The second weekend of Arts in August continues on Friday, August 7th with a special performance by Cleveland Public Theatre’s Student Enrichment Program (STEP).  Inspired by the Inuit folktale The Skeleton Woman, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the Susanoo-no-Miikoto story of Japan, and the South African myth, Selekena and the River Goddess, Lost in the Water is an original piece written and performed by Cleveland youth.  CPT’s STEP program is Cleveland’s longest running arts and job training program for urban teens and is its 21st year!  On Saturday, August 8th, come and enjoy Arts Renaissance Tremont’s presentation of The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra with Paul Ferguson, Artistic Director and Evelyn Wright, Vocalist.  They will be performing music of Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Paul Ferguson, Cole Porter and Frank Sinatra.
The third week of Arts in August showcases Cleveland’s premier professional dance companies.  It begins on Thursday, August 13th with Inlet Dance Theatre. Inlet Dance Theatre creates and performs innovative dance and movement theatre at a high level of artistry.  GroundWorks DanceTheater performs on Friday evening.  They will be performing a World Premiere, Remora.  The dance weekend concludes with Verb Ballets on Saturday, August 15th.  Verb Ballets highlights the artistry of emerging choreographers paired with classic balletic works that have moved audiences for decades.  Verb Ballets also plans to perform a 2015 World Premiere, Because This Must Be.  Please come early to each of these performances because at 7:45pm all are invited to participate in Movement OnStage for a quick dance workshop with the artists.  Please note that if there is a rain cancellation for any of the dance performances, Sunday, August 16th will be the rain date.  The performance will not move inside.
Arts in August will conclude with a music performance weekend.  On Friday, August 21st, Moises Borges Brazilian Jazz Ensemble will perform.  The series will conclude on Saturday, August 23rd with Cleveland Opera Theater, formerly known as Opera per Tutti.  They are returning to Lincoln Park with a performance featuring highlights from Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and others.
The rain location for the theatre and music is Pilgrim Congregational Church located at 2592 West 14th Street.
