Arts in August

Arts in August in Tremont’s Lincoln Park

Tremont West partners each year with our Ward 3 Councilman, Kerry McCormack, LAND Studio and Cleveland Public Theatre to present free professional dance, theatre and music in Lincoln Park to the public during the month of August.

Executive Artistic Director of Cleveland Public Theatre, Raymond Bobgan, is the curator of the performances.  Opening night will be Cleveland Public Theatre's Student Theatre Enrichment Program performs And Yet, We Shine, created and performed by the 2017 STEP unfolds in a nation where artistic expression is illegal. The opening weekend also includes a performance of Macbeth by the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival.

The second weekend is our weekend of Dance.  This year, Friday night's performance will coincide with Walkabout Tremont, see the ad on page 5 for details.  Dance kicks off Friday night with Inlet Dance, their program includes Let Go (2011), Even There, You Lead Me (2016), Walk With Me (2017), This Could Hurt (2005), Doppelganger (2001) and Excerpts from Easter Island Memoirs (Te Pito o te Henuea) (2012). Verb Ballet closes out the dance weekend on Saturday performing Appropriated Memories (2017), Andante Sostenuto (1988), Don Quixote (1869), 3:00am (2014), Tarantella (2005), Surge. Capacity. Force. (2017).

The third weekend we welcome back two of our favorites plus a family dance party on Sundays well as a dedication of the new gazebo in Lincoln Park, 6pm on Friday, August 18th.  Cleveland Opera Theatre will be performing Friday following the dedication; the concert will feature operatic favorites, previews of upcoming seasons, highlights from past seasons, light opera and golden-age musical theater. Wear your favorite dancing shoes on Saturday, August 19th for Papo Ruiz Y La Dulzura de la Salsa, who will be playing merengue, salsa, and bolero, so come and dance around the gazebo or just bring a picnic to watch! Me Him & Her Presents - Good Vibes, a family-friendly outdoor dance party featuring DJs spinning funk, soul, disco, reggae and music from around the world on Sunday, August 20th, 12-8pm.  Join us!  It will be fun for the whole family!

The final weekend we will introduce you to ContempOpera, PopOpera: Is it opera?  Is it musical theater?  Is it classical?  Is it pop? You be the judge at this entertaining concert of contemporary "crossover" pieces featuring some of Cleveland's top opera and theater performing artists.  Partnering with Tremont’s Arts Renaissance Tremont, for the closing performance of Arts in August, The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra will be performing the music of Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Paul Ferguson, Joni Mitchell, Dizzie Gillespie, Michel Legrand, Cole Porter and more with Artistic Director Paul Ferguson and Vocalist, Evelyn Wright.

We encourage you to invite your friends for free evenings of professional arts in Lincoln Park.  Bring a picnic, order take-out from one of our Tuesdays in Tremont participants listed below.  You definitely want to bring a chair or a blanket to sit and remember you are in a park at dusk, so you might want to bring some bug spray too!
